Another year has come and gone and as an Internet marketer, you have to look back at the last twelve months to see what you have accomplished.

Did you get rich with that new $27 Clickbank product that promised to show you all the secrets that the gurus have been hiding from you?

The biggest flaw I see in people trying to make money online is that they want to get rich overnight and with very little effort.

It just doesn’t work that way.

I have been running a successful online company for the last 15 years and the secret formula to making money online hasn’t changed.

So what is it?

Traffic + Optin = Targeted List

Yup.

For years, you may have been distracted by the next shiny object syndrome, but the fact is that the money is and will always be in the list.

Email is not dead and never will be.

There is a very high probability that you are reading this post because of an email that I sent you.

Trust me when I say that I have tested it all.

Twitter doesn’t work as well as email.

Facebook fan pages do not work as well as email.

Youtube doesn’t work as well as email.

Now using these sources to generate traffic and build a list, well that is a smart strategy.

My advice?  Pick a niche and start building a list.  A list is an asset that can be used to make you a lot of money.  The one skill I tell anyone who wants to make money online is learn the art of traffic generation.  Once you have the traffic, build the list.

Besides the list hosting costs (which are cheap), email is free to send out so why wouldn’t you build a list?

Everywhere you look, everyone is talking about how webinars are the hottest selling tool right now.

While this is true, what most people don’t know is that the average attendance rate versus how many people registered for a webinar is slowly dropping.  Although this may not be true in all niches, it is definitely happening in a few niches such as Internet marketing.

I remember when upwards of 60-70% of the people who registered for a webinar would actually show up for the live event.  But now, webinar attendance has dropped to about 30-35% of registered attendees.

Why? There are a few reasons for this.

One of the main reasons is that everyone is having a webinar now.  Once everyone is doing the same thing, the novelty and impact wear off.

Most people now know that a webinar almost always closes with a sales pitch and there is nothing wrong with this if the pre-pitch content is valuable.

With so many webinars happening in a particular niche, attendees have gotten more conscious of their time and realize that they can’t attend all of them.

Also most people know that a webinar replay is usually put up within hours of the live webinar and prefer to watch it on their own time.

If you have seen a drop in your webinar attendance, here are a few suggestions to get it back up.

1. Provide rock-solid content before the sales pitch so your webinar attendees actually learn something in exchange for their time.

2. Offer an exclusive bonus for everyone who attends the live webinar.  Maybe a free report or software tool.

3. Offer prizes such as an iPad 2 that will be given to a random live webinar attendee.  People love contests and a chance to win.

4. Engage your webinar attendees with polls and questions so that they feel apart of the webinar.

5. Offer an exclusive deal for the product pitch just for live webinar attendees.

6. Make the webinar replay available for only a limited time period.

7. You may not even want to make a replay available. This may get more people on the live event.

8. Instead of just boring powerpoint slides, spice them up with animations, images and possible video in your webinar presentation.

I still do think webinars are one of the best marketing tools for promotions, but webinar presenters are going to have to become more creative to get attendance back up.

It is no secret that spying on your competitors can save you a large amount of time when it comes to setting up winning affiliate campaigns. The traditional affiliate model requires you picking an offer, setting up a few campaigns on paid traffic sources and then testing to see what converts.

But the problem with this process is that there are dozens of variables to test (i.e. split testing banner creatives) and before you can develop a winning campaign, you have already lost a lot of money. One of the quickest shortcuts to success is watching what is already ready working in the market and simply improving upon it. There is nothing wrong with this and is simply the equivalent of a company going to the supermarket to see their competitor’s new packaging.

There are many tools available that allow you to see which ads have been running for months on pay per click search engines and media buying platforms. The logic is that if the ad has been running for a long period of time, the advertiser must be making money.

As an affiliate, this can also help you identify affiliate programs that are profitable and save you a large amount of time in the testing phase to see what works and what doesn’t. You can then take their ads and banners and build upon them to create even better ones.

There are many spy tools available online that allow you to see what is working today. You can easily click on one of the many successful ads and reverse engineer entire ad campaigns. In fact, many affiliates leave tracking footprints on their landing page, so you can clearly see what paid traffic platforms they are using to send traffic.

As an advertiser, it may be concerning to know that your ads are being monitored, but that is the evolution of Internet marketing. Spy tools are nothing new and have been around for years.

I know at one point there was concern from PPV marketers about PPV spy tools coming out and spying on what was running on the PPV networks.  This was a concern because anytime an automated robot crawls the PPV networks, this costs the advertiser an impression.  And PPV advertisers pay their ad campaigns by impression and not click.  Luckly so far, I haven’t seen this become a major issue – yet.

A new service called MixRank just recently launched and they have catalogued the entire Google Content network so you can see what ads have been running for extended periods of time. I have arranged a $1 trial offer with the guys over at Mixrank for a 7 day membership for my readers.

I remember the first time I started getting involved with making money was when I was a teenager and purchased a book called the “Royal Road To Riches” by John Wright.  This was after seeing a compelling one page sales letter in a national magazine.

This was in the early 1990′s and still a few years before the birth of the Internet.

I bought the book through blind sales copy (a sales letter that never reveals what the secret is but what it is not) and really didn’t know what it was all about until I received it in the mail.  The sales copy was compelling because it was a secret on how to make $25,000 a month from the comfort of your own home.

When I received the book, I quickly devoured it in one sitting. The secret in the book was all about selling information by mail.  Now at first, I was little bit agitated and was sitting there thinking, “That’s it? That is the secret I shelled out $12.95 for (I was a teenager back then so that was a fortune to me)? Selling information by mail?!”

But now that I look back at that experience, it really had a profound effect on my life.  You see I did give it a try at selling information using direct mail but I didn’t have much success.  It was also a lot of work having books printed, stored and then shipped.  Being in Canada didn’t make it very cost effective to ship to the USA either.  Taking out ads in major national magazines was a pain and I would have to wait anywhere from 2-3 months before my ad would actually run.

But when the Internet came around, that really changed everything.  Not just for me, but for hundreds of thousands of people who sell information online now.

I could now sell information online in digital formats and take payments via credit card rather than having customers send me a check.

There are no printing costs involved and my customers now receive the information I sell instantly.

In fact, I have now sold millions of dollars online of just information in the form of ebooks, audio and video files.

One individual who has had enormous success selling information online is Eben Pagan who has sold over $100 million from the comfort of his own bedroom.

Eben found that people were looking for specialized information in the dating market and went out to create that information.

His dating information empire alone has grown to a $25-$30 million dollar business alone.

Eben has recently launched new information on how anybody can get involved in the “selling information” online business and how to do it successfully.

About a year ago I got involved with sending traffic to companies who have built co-registration paths that automatically optimize the advertisements shown to the audience.  For example, if you have job traffic, some of these companies have a job co-reg path that displays job related offers that convert best based on your audience.  Some of these companies will even go the extra step and build an entire co-reg path based on the type of audience that you have.

I know of some affiliates who were doing as much as $5,000-$10,000 a day sending traffic to a co-reg path.  Basically it work as a revenue share between you and the co-reg network.
